There are only two kinds of books that I write in: craft books and cookbooks. In this particular case, I neglected to note in my baking book which method I used to make my pie dough. My brain cell thought that I mixed things up in the food processor – so I did. After having eyed this first batch of dough warily, I stuck it in the fridge for a good five hours to let the glutens do their thing and then brought it out for a roll. I can roll cookies so thin that you can see through them. So when this pie dough came out like soft shredded mush before rolling, I knew that something was wrong. But, I’m stubborn, so I tried anyway. It all ended up in the trash and I had to dig out more shortening and stuff it in the fridge to chill.

I promptly grabbed a pencil and wrote in my cookbook, “Don’t use the food processor! Very bad things happen!”

It is now 11pm and I have just finished making a lovely batch of pie dough using my mixer. I’ll roll it out tomorrow morning, stick it back in the fridge and work on the apple compote. Then make some pretty apple slices and put them on top and then caramelize and voila! One French apple tart! (I hope.)

Pictures forthcoming. (I hope.)

For now… I’m off to bed and wish my pie dough happy glutenizing.

Bring December babies! :) This past weekend, with lots of help from Kat and a cast of a few dozen others (thank you thank you and you know who you are!!) my home was transformed into a party zone for Jenni’s baby shower. The menu was very straightforward: chocolate, chocolate and chocolate! We did have some veggies thrown in to make us feel better and Mirella made these amazing cranberry-and-something-or-other meatballs and there was lots of fruit for dipping in the chocolate fondue, of course. ;) Speaking of sweets, I do have a picture to show you of the cake and cookies that we had. Both are from Amphora Bakery which makes some totally decadent stuff! The cookies are butter cookies with royal icing. Sounds simple, eh? Well, try one and you’ll think otherwise! The cake is a three layer chocolate cake with milk chocolate mousse in between the layers. Drooling yet? This is the smallest version of the cake and it’s meant to serve 18-20 people. With all the other food we had, we figured it would be fine for the 25 we were expecting. Can you believe we only managed to eat the canopy of the carriage?!? Jenni got lots of practical and, of course, adorable stuff and she’ll be taking all the pictures I took home with her tonight as her dial up just won’t let her download 27.8 meg (zipped) of pictures. *grins* She smiled a whole lot and modeled lots of sweet clothes on her belly. Lucky for me, she also took her singing balloon home which made my daughters go, “Rats!”

And now, this morning’s grumble… Windows deemed that I needed a security update. Ok, that’s fine with me. I was however, in the middle of something when it asked me if it wanted to “restart now.” So, I said, “No, I’ll restart later.” I did some more typing and then got up to finish packing lunches for my twin goobers and shuffle them off to the bus stop. I’m in the kitchen and I hear the unmistakable sound of my computer restarting. “Hey!” I say from the kitchen. “I said I would restart you later. When I say later, I mean MY later, not YOUR later.”

My husband, who’s switched from a PC to a MacBook, is quite amused by my situation, and tells me how I’m owned by Microsoft and scoots his way out the door to class.

There’s some serious thought to be put into switching to a computer who’s latest OS is based in Linux.

When getting from point A to point B it’s theoretically most efficient to go in a straight line. But hey, I’m not only female I’m blonde, too! Where’s the fun in missing all the other bright shiny objects along the way? And why stop there? I’d hate for any less than bright and shiny objects to feel left out, so I have to stop and check those out, too. Yup, my brain is all over the place and with all that’s been going on these past few weeks, it’s no surprise. But I’ll make up for the length between posts with some pictures. One of which is a stitching picture… sort of.

First, I’ll start with a crafty picture from my seven year old daughter Margaret who had to do her first “for real” report – which totally made her feel like a big second grade girl. What excited her even more was the topic: bugs. Maggie loves critters of every kind. Snakes are one of her favorite, but bugs aren’t too bad, either. She got to pick from a list, and chose a praying mantis. Along with this report, she also needed to make a visual aid of some sort. She decided that she wanted to do a sculpture in clay. Sooooo… I decided that in order for this thing to not fall over that it needed some sort of supportive inner skeleton. So Scott and I made a rudimentary wire skeleton (but didn’t call it that being as praying mantises have exoskeletons) for her to wrap clay around. She then spent half an hour mixing brown and green clay, examining the picture and creating a creature that I named “Melvin.” Aside from smoothing out a few of her seams, I didn’t give her much help at all. She did insist on the huge yellow googly eyes, but you can still tell it’s a praying mantis and that’s what counts! I’ll spare you all the interesting facts we all learned as she was doing her report. ;)

A happy belated Halloween to everyone! Some of you have heard about my favorite decoration which is my splatted witch. Here’s a picture of her along with two little goobers standing on my front porch. Maggie is a ghost, but not a scary ghost, as she informed me when she chose her costume… she had to be a cute ghost. Lindsey is a jack-o-lantern. She is missing her two front teeth. She did have makeup on her face, but it was stressing her out with major itchies, so we had to remove it right away.

I’ve been kitting up Golden Kite’s “A Peacock and Doves in a Garden” for the past few weeks and I was originally going to preblend all 120 blends before starting. Well, after over a week of blending (this following a week of bobbinating and gridding) I was getting stitching withdrawal and needed to make some Xs. So last night I stopped blending and sewed the fabric on to the (no laughing now) 34 inch scroll rods. These rods are a few inches too large, but they weren’t in use and I didn’t want to buy or make other ones. Today, I actually made Xs! *does a little dance* When I was walking into the room later in the day, I just stopped and my jaw fell open. It’s huge! Not just large… but huge! I don’t think I’ve ever posted a picture of my stitching space before, so here you go… my winter niche. I will actually have to move my light based on which part of the chart I am stitching. (Doh!) Do you see how wide my stand has to go for Peacock and Doves? It’s wider than the chair!! *makes a goofy face* That red blanket you see is my very important heated throw. Or, I should say, Nikki’s heated throw. Nikki is Scott’s kitty and she loves sleeping on it. In this picture, though, you can see her snoozing under the table next to her toy. In the winter she’s sleeping on my feet (on her blankie) and Ziggy will be on one arm of my chair and Stardust will be on the other. I feel like an Egyptian cat goddess when they do that!

And finally… while trying to find my furniture underneath all the Halloween clutter on Thursday, I came across several tennis balls and this made me sniffle and shed lots of tears. Why? Because last Friday, I lost my favorite four-legged lady. Sheba passed away and while it wasn’t unexpected, it was (and still is) very difficult to accept. My heart goes out to Kathie and Mike for their loss and I know they know that we adore her and miss her very much.

We love you, Sheba. You will always be The Queen.

… and I’m ok with that. But I’m also ok with adding in more SALs and attempts to topple me from sitting here working on just one project at a time. Speaking of which, here’s my progress on Celtic Summer. She has most of the gold border on the bottom of her dress, all of the teal in the front panel of her dress (save for the beads), all of the dark teal in the remaining panel and last but not least, her shoe. I was staring at that foot of hers wondering why the thing was stitched in highly contrasting (read: clashing) DMC instead of the Needlepaints, but if it weren’t, then I suppose it would just fade into her gown. Sitting back, it looks ok. It’s just up close that it really clashes.

Next up, that finish I teased you with last time I posted. It’s the top third of Just Nan’s Beware! that I sent to Vicky as part of our Halloween/Autumn Exchange.
I braved a new technique and finished it as a flat-fold per Judy Odell’s instructions. I was amazed at the result since finishing is not my forte!

In other stitching news, I’m currently bobbinating the 100 colors needed for “A Peacock and Doves in a Garden” in between stitching Celtic Summer and Nancy’s RR. Since P&D uses 120 blends and 80 solids, I’ve decided to try a new storage system. I’m going to pre-blend my flosses and use the Pako thread storage system. I found them for $11.99 (US) in Herrschner’s online catalog, so that was a bonus. Our local JoAnn’s also started carrying Sulky threads, so I picked up some spiffy colors of that to use for page-gridding, so now I just need to wait for my fabric and Pako thinga-ma-whoosits to arrive and I’ll be halfway ready to start. *rolls her eyes*

I’ve been bitten by some sort of alien bug and it’s mutating me into something quite un-Suelike. For the past two days I have had this very strong urge to be totally practical with my stitching and become a one-at-a-time stitcher. (OAATer) Is it because I really like what I have in my stand? Err… no, it’s Celtic Summer. Is it because I’ve got this huge urge to finish something? No, I just finished an RR piece and an exchange, so I got a nice dose of endorphins with those. Is it guilt? Heck no, I just bought a new and expensive chart! Wanna see? It’s got 100 colors and 120 blends! *rolls her eyes* A Peacock and Doves in a Garden

So what is it? Kat tried tempting me with Cirques (which I have the fabric, silk and beads for) and Celestial Dragon (which I have started and love), but I countered with Cirques being more thinking than I want to do right now as I am doing it in silks and beads and have to figure out which goes where and since Teresa is planning on releasing some new things, I figure I’ll work on my dragon during a TW SAL then.

I don’t get it!
